FAQs

How is this program different from traditional group homes?

Group home models are “provider-controlled”: this means the staff takes all the decisions and also does most of the cooking, cleaning, and shopping for their residents. This prevents individuals with disabilities from learning and practicing skills that could help them become more independent.

Our approach is different: instead of taking over, we help you do these daily tasks yourself – so you can become more independent each day. Our “do with” versus “do for” approach ensures that you are involved every step of the way. It is your life, you choose how you want to live it, and our well-trained SIL staff are there to nudge you and guide you along.

Can I receive SIL services in my family home?

Yes. Recent changes in the DDA Waiver funding now allows SIL to be provided for individuals living in their family homes. This is in addition to receiving services in an apartment that you rent yourself or with other roommates.

How many hours per day will I have a staff working in my home?

You and your circle of support choose the staff support hours. For individuals with increased medical and supervision needs to maintain their health and safety, staffing supports are available up to 24 hours per day

Does the supported living program pay for my rent, utilities, and food?

No. Individuals enrolled in the program are responsible for their personal bills. Our staff can support you with budgeting and money management so you don’t fall behind on your rent, utilities and other bills.

If you are looking to rent an apartment or apply for rent vouchers, we recommend you consider our Housing Supports Services.

I live in a group home now, and want to move out on my own. Is this program right for me?

Certainly! The supported living program can provide similar supports you receive in the group home, but in a less restrictive manner where you get to make your own choices.

If you want to move out of the group home, your first step is to find housing. We can also help you find work and create a budget so you can pay for your daily expenses.

The supported living program kicks in as soon as you move into your home.
